THE UK'S first Astute-class submarine has passed two significant milestones in its test and commissioning programme: completing initial weapons-firing tests and making her first dive at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. The nuclear-powered attack submarine was launched in June and is due to enter service in January 2009. In the first stage of the firing test programme, ten dummy torpedoes and Tomahawk missiles were discharged in the dock at BAE Systems in Barrow.
