Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pledged to continue offering”hundreds”of oil and gas leases in theUK sector of the North Sea and has also committed the government to support two new carboncapture projects.The moves come as Sunak's Conservative government seeks to present itself to voters as opposingto environmental polices backed by the Labour party-including a pledge to halt new oil and gasleasing.The Conservatives-which have been trailing Labour in recent opinion polls-believe that suchpolicies have become less popular among UK voters who continue to face high costs for energy andother essential goods and services.”Now more than ever,it's vital that we bolster our energy security and capitalize on thatindependence to deliver more affordable,clean energy to British homes and businesses,”Sunakargued.
