It was one of the original six zones re-organized under Indian Railways and was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. It was further divided after the creation of NFR in 1958 and ECR in 2002. Presently, North Eastern Railway has three divisions with headquarters at Varanasi, Lucknow, and Izzatnagar having 3472 Route KM and 505 railway stations. It is mainly a passenger-oriented system that serves the people of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Bihar by providing modern and safe travel facilities.
