RUGGED ELECTRONIC chips that stand up to high temperatures and pressures to aid deep-well gas drilling are the latest product of the Department of Energy's Deep Trek research and development program. Historically, most U.S. natural gas comes from reservoirs located roughly one or two miles underground, but domestic production from these wells has been declining while U.S. dependence on natural gas is growing.
