Deep Brain Stimulation Offers Hope - and a Lesson about Depression

Is depression a normal response to a significant loss, or a debilitating illness (that can be fatal), which sometimes requires deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treatment? We can find a very interesting range of views in our literature. This October issue of Psychiatric Annals, guest edited by Darin D. Dougherty, MD, reviews the brain circuitry involved in depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and reviews the results of treatment with DBS.
