Well respected for solid quality, pleasing performance, and comfort for the time, Cadillac was on a roll by the mid Twenties. Marketing itself as the "Standard of the World," its acceptance among luxury-car buyers was growing, giving impetus to its main mission: outsell archrival Packard. For 1928, newly hired California stylist Harley Earl-who had just completed a groundbreaking design for the launch of Cadillac's new "companion car," the 1927 LaSalle-lengthened and lowered the looks of Cadillac's 26 distinct models with bodies by Fisher and Fleetwood. Meanwhile, Ernest Seaholm's staff of engineers upgraded the two-year-old Series 314 V-8 engine and upsized it to 341 cid. "The new Cadillac marks the greatest advance in design, distinction, luxury and performance of any car produced by the Cadillac Motor Car Company in its twenty-five years of fine motor car manufacture," a 1928 promotional book The Nezv Cadillac Details of Construction boasted.
