In 1953, John Naka performed his first demonstration for his first class, styling a foemina juniper, Juniperus chinensis 'Foemina', into a formal upright. That day, John began not only his teaching career but also what would became the most famous American bonsai. Other foemina junipers soon joined it on his bonsai bench. A twin-trunk tree with both trunks of equal girth and height was manipulated until there was a significant difference in the sizes of each trunk. And because of a slight bend in the massive trunk of another juniper, the owner of Del Amo Home Garden Nursery was willing to part with it. Now John had three distinctly different junipers in three different pots.
