Records from the Bonsai Bench: Botanical Name - Chaenomeles/Common Name - Flowering Quince

First described by the English botanist John Linley in the early 19th Century while preparing his work on pome-fruited plants. The species of Chaenomeles (C. japonica, C. speciosa) and the hybrid between them (C. x superba) are all deciduous floweringshrubs consisting of suckering stems ranging from three to ten feet in height, depending on their genetic heritage. Branches may or may not have thorns with those genetically closest to the species having more than other hybrids. Early spring flower clusters (Figure 2) range from single to double in form with colors in the white, pink and red shades being the most common and orange being the rarest. Leaves are ovate or oblong of rich green color. Flowering occurs on the second year wood.
