Grafting Bald Cypress Knees

Bald cypress, Taxodium distichum, trees, particularly those growing in or near water will develop knees as part of their root system. It is reported that these extensions of the roots allow for absorption of oxygen as they protrude above the water. Knees appear in many shapes and sizes, from single and cone-shaped, to large and multiple cone groups. They have also been found in small forms along horizontal roots above the water level.
