According to Juan Carlos Salazar, ICAC Secretary General, "Air transport is the safest mode of transport, even during the currentglobal circumstances." Salazar was speaking in August as the organisation released its latest annual safety report - a detailed analysis of civil aviation safety performance covering worldwide operations in 2021. Among the report's conclusions was that the global accident rate for last year had fallen by 9.8% versus 2020, dropping from 2.14 to 1.93 accidents per million departures. Even more striking was the 2021 fatality count, which was down by 66% compared with the previous year (although the number of accidents where fatalities occurred remained unchanged at four). In 2021, there were 104 fatalities linked to scheduled commercial air transport accidents, down from 298 in 2020. "Scheduled commercial flight departures in 2021 increased by almost 11%, but even despite these millions of more flights amid restart and recovery resource shortages, and the many other operational challenges facing airline and airport operators today, air transport's collective and longstanding commitment to the safety, security and health of passengers and crew remains unwavering," Salazar said.
