It had been a while since my last gold nugget hunt but now that the Melbourne Covid-19 lockdown was over and the weather was clearing, I decided it was time to head out to an area that had only been flogged since the 1850s - the Victorian goldfields! I swing a Minelab SDC 2300 which is not only easy to pack and carry anywhere, it's amazingly good at finding sub-gram nuggets. Cutting a long story short, I'd been roaming for an hour finding the usual bullets, ring-pulls, nails and racing-pigeon leg rings, when I noticed a run-off area in the creek bed that ended at the opening of a wombat hole.
