Relating Nursing Staff Quality to Patients' Needs

The author has developed a technique for relating levels of patient care needs to nursing staff competence. Patient and nurse classification data are used in simple mathematical formulas that help to assess staffing practices. Sample data from two hospital maternity units demonstrate how nursing administrators can use this technique to relate quantity and quality of care to staffing in their own institutions.
