Christian Fresquet, Deputy Secretary General of International Sericulture Commission, France visited traditional sericultural areas of Mandya on June 21, 2010. He witnessed well-maintained mulberry garden and silkworm rearing activities by the progressive sericulturists like Shri Raghu and Smt. Puttatayamma of Halebudanur village who have adopted scientific methods recommended by REC and DOS, Maddur and harvested good cocoon yield, as high as 80 kg/100 dfls. Interacting with the farmers, he learnt about their success stories of becoming seri-entrepreneurs. He also visited private chawki rearing centre of Shri Ramachandra at Hemmige village of Mandya district. Dr. Vinod B. Mathur, Scientist-C, REC, Maddur narrated the switchover of the farmers from traditional tray rearing to present day shoot rearing of silkworms for good returns. He also briefed about the importance of chawki rearing and maintenance of suitable environmental condition with quality leaf feed to get higher returns.
