How do you describe your work when asked by someone outside the geotechnical sector? I describe the work I do as assessing the ground risk for any given development. This ranges from geotechnical issues like subsidence and ground movement to contaminated land relating to human health and controlled water receptors. If I want it to sound exciting to kids, I say I'm a ground detective, solving problems. What do you enjoy most about your work? I most enjoy the variety. No job is the same, whether that is the ground conditions, development or the people you work with. The different ground conditions have such a wide array of problems that can impact anything from highways to a high rise building. I also enjoy being on site and getting my hands in some mud, compared to more formal meeting rooms.
