General practitioners perform an incredibly complex and important role within the NHS; they are indeed crucial to its very survival. Yet despite having the largest curriculum of all medical specialties, general practice has until now had the shortest training requirement: This has always seemed paradoxical" and many voices have advocated change for several years. I was Chair of the Associates in Training (AiT) Committee from 2008-9 and wrote an article for InnovAiT following the publication of theTooke report, which recommended the length of training in general practice should be extended 'to bring it in line with specialty training and the other developed European countries'.
