This review summarizes previous information aboutEscherichia colivirulence factors in pyelonephritis and reviews progress since July 1993. Extensive genetic studies of organelle development have been undertaken of both fimbrial and afimbrial adhesins, and it appears that P fimbriae remain the major single virulence factor, particularly in pyelonephritis associated with sepsis.
