摘要

It may seem strange to review in a railway magazine a book about a man who created a huge trucking company, but Ken Thomas had a great appreciation of rail and was one of the first transport industry leaders who realised that real efficiencies could be gained by all modes working together. The founder of TNT, which started in Australia and in due course operated in much of the western world, was born into a railway family. His father was an engine driver at Harden in New South Wales. The family later shifted to Sydney where his father drove electric multiple units. At the end of the Second World War, and having attained two university degrees, he was looking for a job. A relation of his talked him into buying a truck, together with the promise of work. Not being able to drive a truck, Ken employed a driver, but before he picked up his first load the work disappeared.
