This article presents a brief review of the first experimental papers on the generation of powerful pulsed VUV radiation when it is excited by a relativistic electron beam in inert gases in the solid, liquid, and gaseous states in the temperature range 58-300 K. The details of the experimental technique are considered, and the results of experiments on the generation of powerful spontaneous and stimulated VUV radiation are presented. The xenon-dimer laser created as a result of these studies is discussed.
