Its sensitive role as a collector of nuclear particles means the WC-135W Constant Phoenix is infrequently seen and its missions are mostly secret. This summer it made a rare visit to the UK, as Bob Archer reports. THE SOLE WC-135W, 61-2667, that performs the Constant Phoenix mission, flew from Offutt AFB, Nebraska, via Bangor Maine, to Mildenhall on July 31. Preparations for its first mission started soon after its arrival at the UK base. Such was the importance of the operation that the resident 100th ARW placed two of its KC-135Rs ready to support the planned lengthy sorties.
