Fournier's gangrene is rarely seen in urological practice, but it is one of the few urological emergencies. Knowledge of this life-threatening infection is important; misjudgment at initial presentation and delayed initiation of appropriate treatment leads to a fast deterioration of the condition. The prognosis of the patient depends on immediate intervention. Over the past few years, therapeutic options have not essentially changed, consisting of extensive surgical débridement in combination with antibiotics. The additive role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy remains controversial.
