Urinary tract infections in the elderly

Urinary tract infection is common in elderly people. Recent studies assessing the impact of bacteriuria on the health of elderly people in long-term care facilities confirm that there is limited morbidity or mortality attributable to urinary tract infection, despite the high prevalence of bacteriuria. Intravaginal oestriol is an effective option for prevention of recurrent urinary tract infection in postmenopausal women.
