Switch networks play a primary role in circuit/path provisioning in communications networks. High-performance switch fabric with a capacity of several hundreds of Gb/s or more is required for high-speed and broadband networks in the near future. Various researches of switch fabrics including switch design principles, switch prototypes, and testbeds employing them have been reported. This technical report focuses on recent progress in high-performance switch design principles. Switch applications area in this report is divided into four areas such as time-division multiplexed (TDM) networks, asynchronous time-division multiplexed networks (ATM), optical/wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) networks, and router (packet switch) networks. Several typical switch architectures for each application area, which the author believes important, are briefly reviewed.
