PLANS FOR the UK to lead the development of a new, airworthy sixth-generation combat air demonstrator were revealed by UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace during the opening day of FIA on July 18.This combat demonstrator, which is scheduled to fly in the next five years, will play a crucial role in establishing and proving the technology and design principles needed to deliver the UK's Future Combat Air System (FCAS), which centres around the Tempest next-generation fighter. BAE Systems is leading this demonstrator programme with aid from multiple UK-based suppliers and the UK MOD and will be the first combat air demonstration to be both designed and developed by the UK in a generation.Engineers at BAE Systems across northern England are leading the design, test, evaluation and build progress for the combat demonstrator, using new and novel digital engineering technologies, such as synthetic modelling and model-based systems engineering.
