Abstract. These studies were undertaken to explore the observation of Valtisand Kennedythat the right‐shifted O2curve produced by treating stored bank blood with sodium chloride would persist after its administration, and to restudy the effects of glutathione (GSH) on the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve, originally studied by Horejsiand Komarkova. The Valtis‐Kennedy salt effect was reversed by washing the salt‐treated red cells with physiological saline. No change in the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve was apparent as the result of glutathione treatment when the red cells in solution had been corrected to a pH o
