Milwaukee Art Museum Addition Wins 2003 OCEA Award

The Milwaukee Are Museum Addition-a glorious testament to the capacities of structural engineering-was named the winner of ASCE's 2003 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award on May 1 at the annual Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) gala, which was held in Washington, D. C. The Milwaukee-based firm Graef, Anhalt, Schloemer & Associates, Inc., the structural and civil engineers of record, worked with architect Santiago Calatrava and other team members from the project's inception to bring the magnificent structure to fruition. The Quadracci Pavilion, as the addition has been named represents a significant expansion of the art museum and consists of three major components: a central gallery building; and ingeniously movable winglike structure- the Burke Brise-Soleil- composed of 72 steel fins and resting atop a vaulted 90-foot-high glass-enclosed reception hall; and cable-stayed suspended pedestrian bridge, which provides a direct ink to downtown Milwaukee.
