Four Finalists Chosen in 2004 Pankow Competition

Four civil engineering projects have been selected as finalists in the 2004 competition for the Civil Engineering Research Foundation's Charles 'Pankow Award for Innovation. The projects are a steel plate/composite concrete shear wall system that provides the primary gravity-, wind-, and earthquake-resisting system for a building; HYDECK, a durable and efficient hybrid bridge deck system; a method referred to as electroosmotic pulse technology that uses electrical pulses to control water movement within porous construction materials; and a bioreactor-ready bottom liner system that protects the soil and groundwater surrounding a landfill from contamination. Named for the late industry visionary Charles J. Pankow, the award recognizes organizations working col-laboratively to aid the design and construction industry by bringing innovations into practice. A leader in civil engineering for more than 50 years, Pankow was instrumental in launching the Civil Engineering Research Foundation.
