Strategic global sourcing: Procurement decision concepts in the aviation manufacturing industry

This paper conceptualizes and examines the underlying parameters for successful and robust global sourcing strategies in the aviation manufacturing industry. The result is a systematically developed global sourcing decision framework. The core objective of this model was to respect unique attributes of the industry (key decision drivers) which dictate the definition of effective supplier landscapes. Cost drivers were identified through an empirical study conducted at a significant panel group comprising of senior experts working in the field globally and being responsible for 40% of the entire volume traded within the industry. The research concludes in proposing a way of logically comparing sourcing options on a common variable, a Sourcing Option Indicator (SOI). The model is proposed to firms in the sector and finds practical application, currently in testing phases.
