Emergency medical services (EMS) is one of the most active, albeit overlooked, parts of commercial aviation, wherein various aircraft types - business jets, turboprops and helicopters - are configured with specialist medical equipment. Industry heavyweights including Textron Aviation, Airbus Helicopters, Gulfstream Aerospace and Pilatus Aircraft are all involved. There are numerous specialist certified air ambulance/medevac operators and service providers globally and an extensive ecosystem of third-party developers supplying bespoke medical interiors.November 2018 saw a new type enter the aeromedical arena: the Pilatus PC-24. The company told AIR International that 16 examples are now used for EMS work around the world. The first operator, Australia's Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), currently fields six PC-24s from its bases at Broome in Western Australia and Adelaide in South Australia. Other medically configured PC-24s are used by the New South Wales Air Ambulance, Kommunalforbundet Svenskt Ambulansflyg (KSA; Swedish Air Ambulance) and the Alaska North Slope Borough.
