One of the challenges for doctors coming in to general practice is that they find that patients do not always mean what the doctor thinks they have said. As a bit of light-hearted, end-of-year relief, I will try to provide some help for the bewildered by giving some examples of commonly used phrases with two alternative, apparently contradictory, translations for each phrase. I will go on to give some advice about how you might judge which of the two translations applies to your patient.
