Virginia's Old Cape Henry Lighthouse was designated a national civil engineering landmark on August 27 by ASCE and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA). Society members and other participants unveiled a bronze plaque at the lighthouse honoring the historic treasure as "the first construction project authorized by the First U.S. Congress." In this capacity it set the stage for all subsequent public works projects of the federal government. The brief ceremony was held at the base of the steps to the lighthouse, which is located on the grounds of Fort Story, an active U.S. Army post in Virginia Beach.
