This year saw the end of the protracted period of transition that has affected the Transport Studies Unit (TSU) with the appointment in September 1997 of Dr John Preston as Director and Reader in Transport Studies. He was formerly at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds, latterly as Senior Lecturer in Transport Economics. Dr Preston succeeded Professor Gordon Clark who was Acting Director from January 1996 onwards. From October 1997, Dr Preston was also appointed Tutorial Fellow in Geography at St Anne's College. The Unit was re-launched with a buffet lunch on 3 October 1997, attended by over 40 members of the local transport community. At the re-launch it was stressed that the aim of the Unit is to reestablish itself as a centre for excellence in transport research and teaching. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding the social, economic and environmental impacts of transport over both time and space.
