ASCE Joins in Effort to Refurbish Boys and Girls Club in Chicago

For the fourth consecutive year, ASCE members participated in an all-day community service project at the conclusion of the annual conference. The event this year was held in Chicago on October 22 at the Louis L. Valentine Boys and Girls Club, ASCE partnered with Rebuilding Together, an organization devoted to revitalizing houses for those with low incomes, in an effort to improve the functionality and appearance of the club. A total of more than 40 volunteers from ASCE, Rebuilding Together, and the club itself busied themselves with a variety of tasks, among them revamping ceilings and floors; installing drywall; renovating windows; assembling bookshelves; repairing cabinets; and painting walls. "Rebuilding Together is pleased to once again partner with the American Society of Civil Engineers to preserve and revitalize a nonprofit facility in the community," said Gary Officer, Rebuilding Together's president and chief executive officer, in a press release on October 18. "By working together, our organizations are leaving a lasting impact in the city of Chicago and beyond. The partnership between us is a natural alliance and serves as a perfect example of the importance of making our communities more livable."
