Relations between the world’s three leading oil producers — the US, Saudi Arabia and Russia — have defned the balance of power in the oil sector since the formation of the Opec+ producer alliance in 2016. The Covid-led recession of 2020 tightened ties between Opec+ leaders Riyadh and Moscow. But the energy crisis heightened by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may leave Saudi Arabia and the US with more in common as they chart a course towards the energy transition.
