The hypolipaemic effects of the vegetable Allium tuberosum (ATR), fermented Allium tuberosum (FATR) and processed sulfur (PS) were investigated in an animal model. 30 male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: CON (control, normal diet); HFD (high fat diet); HS (HFD + PS); AS (HFD + ATR + processed sulfur); and FAS (HFD + FATR + PS). Animals were given these diets for 6 wk. Body weights of the animals were recorded at the beginning and end of the experiment. The animals were sacrificed, organ and tissue weights were recorded, and blood and hepatic tissue samples were analysed for various biochemical parameters. Results show that body weight gain in the AS group was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that in the other groups. Spleen and renal tissue weights in the FAS group were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those of the other groups. The weight of epididymal adipose tissue in the AS group was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that of the HFD group. The weight of retroperitoneal fat in HFD groups was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of the other groups. The concn. of aspartate amino transferase (AST) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the HFD group compared with that in the HS, AS and FAS groups. Total hepatic lipids content in the HFD group was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that in the other groups. AS and FAS group rats had significantly (P < 0.05) lower triglycerides and total cholesterol concn. compared with those of the HFD group. Thus, it is suggested that FATR and PS may play an important role in reducing body fat deposition and altering the serum and hepatic lipids profile in rats.
