Fertility problems are common. Those affected will typically first present to primary care, therefore GPs have a critical role in responding appropriately and in a sensitive manner. A flexible response is required that is dependent on the nature of the presentation and any associated psychosociai stress or relationship tension. At various times this may involve reassurance, investigation or onward referral. Understanding when and how to intervene is fundamental to the provision of effective support.
