The last few years have seen major clinical and scientific advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of several lung disease that run a relentless progressive course. This knowledge provides the opportunity to modify these major health problems by new therapeutic strategies. The lessons learned by careful trial and error will have implications that may alter our management of inflammatory diseases in many organs.
