When Denver Water determined the concrete liner of the vertical shaft at its Dillon Dam spillway had deteriorated, engineers explored two options: replacing the concrete liner or installing a new stainless steel liner. The stainless steel liner offered a permanent, maintenance-free repair. Completed in 1963, Dillon Dam is a multipurpose municipal water storage facility 70 miles west of Denver and the centerpiece of one of Colorado's most scenic and heavily used recreation areas. Dillon Reservoir is the largest water storage facility in Denver's mountain reservoir collection system. In 1985, Denver Water added a 1.8-MW hydroelectric plant at Dillon Dam.
