While neither expected nor welcomed, South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. in the spring of 1999 learned that its Saluda Dam, a part of the 208-MW Saluda Hydro Project, might fail during an earthquake expected to occur every 450 years. Utility engineers and consultants then spent two years overcoming numerous challenges in designing a $250 million remediation project.
