Two differently colored membrane preparations were separated from the prochlorophyte,Prochloronsp., by mechanical disintegration of the cells followed by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. An orange-colored preparation, containing zeaxanthin as the major constituent pigment, seemed to comprise the cytoplasmic membrane. The other green-colored membrane preparation, containingβ-carotene and chlorophyllaandbas major pigment constituents, was identified as the thylakoid membrane. The two types of membranes were compared as to their absorption spectra and buoyant densities
