Effect of sclerotial inoculum density of Macrophomina phaseolina on charcoal rot of sunflower.

The relationship between sclerotial inoculum of M. phaseolina with damping off and root infection in sunflower was investigated. Infection and colonization of M. phaseolina increased significantly (p<0.05) with the increase in sclerotial populationin the soil. In seed inoculation experiments, the size of inoculated plants was significantly smaller than the uninoculated plants (p<0.001). Infection of roots by M. phaseolina was significantly greater in plants treated with sclerotia compared with control plants (p<0.05).
