Our weather picture for this issue shows conditions late in the afternoon on November 9, 2021. At first glance, the weather appears rather quiet. But after drawing the isobars, we quickly find a deep area of low pressure in British Columbia. The surface plots show rain and cold conditions in Seattle and a strong southwesterly fetch moving into the Washington coast. Clearly there's a lot going on. Many readers probably found the fronts on the east side of the map easy to locate. Thanks to an east-west pressure trough in Kansas and Missouri and a distinct contrast in wind direction, the map provides an almost textbook depiction of a weak stationary front. However, the map gets unclear as we head west into the mountains. If your solution doesn't quite match the one shown here, don't worry. This map provides a tough puzzle, but we'll sort through the details and learn a few things along the way.
