Professionalism in clinical practice:This is a critical time for the medical profession, with unprecedented challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. Changes to the methods of delivery of clinical care, as well as teaching and learning, mean that trainees have had to make adaptations to ensure provision of safe care while simultaneously working towards competencies for independent practice. Professionalism is at the heart of both these areas. However, what do we mean by professionalism? Is it being courteous to our patients and colleagues? Does it mean taking responsibility for our actions? Or does it mean that we must endeavor to keep ourselves up to date with clinical knowledge and policies? The answer is yes to all these, but professionalism encompasses much more than just these three areas.
