Editor's note: There is a range of educational tools available to train vessel and offshore facility crews in emergency response, and an effective program uses a combination of tools to ensure the readiness and safety of personnel, (mt) Editor Douglas R. Kelly sat down (via Zoom, of course) with U.K.-based emergency response expert Martin Sidgwick to talk about the challenges inherent in emergency response in the marine environment and the role played by augmented reality and virtual reality tools. DOUGLAS R. KELLY: Martin, tell me about your company and your role there. MARTIN SIDGWICK: I'm the owner/director of Dawn Fire Safety Limited. Essentially, we're involved in the oil and gas sector and offshore, dealing with fire safety, incident preparedness, and pre-planning and training for incident response. So we create scenario-specific emergency response plans...we'll look at risks on a site or on a vessel or an offshore platform and taking those risks into account, assess what would be required as a credible response to an incident and then create plans to deal with them.
