The amount of radioactive ion exchange spent resins in the water cleaning systems of nuclear power plants is increasing. In this experiment, we examined the volume reduction technique for SKN-1 bead ion exchange resin using the non-thermal ICP(Inductively Coupled Plasma). Experimental results indicate a volume reduction ratio of 96% after 5 hours of plasma treatment with new SKN-1 and the amount of plasma exhaust gas was about two to three times as much as the volume of oxygen. The amount of cobalt scattered to theexhaust system was a mere 0.002%~0.005%. Thus, we obtained good results in effectively reducing the volume by non-thermal plasma.
