This paper demonstrates how to build positive barriers to thediffusion of an information technology inno- vation. Positivebarriers are desirable elements that disable the diffusion of aninnovation to an undesired set of potential adopters. Systemdevelopers are motivated in many ways to construct such positivebarriers, for example, by security and privacy of proprietaryinnovations. This paper draws on the broad research that hasilluminated the enabling factors in the diffusion of informationtechnology, and shows how selected examples of these factors can alsobe applied in usefully constructing barriers against diffusion.
