This special "Archaea" issue of Archives of Microbiology is dedicated to the Priority Research Program "Genome Function and Gene Regulation in Archaea", which was established by the German Research Council (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) in 2000 and run from 2001 to 2007. During this time, the number of sequenced archaeal genomes increased from 6 to 53, functional genomic techniques (transcriptome and proteome analyses) were introduced, genetic techniques became available for various archaeal species and molecular insight into many regulatory processes was gained. The members of the Priority Research Program had their fair share at that tremendous development of archaeal molecular biology.
