Tips and Techniques: Bonsai push rods

In an earlier issue, the use of guy wires to achieve substantial bending was discussed. In some instances, the training forces needed are not easily accomplished with either wiring or guy wires. This situation arises most often when there is a need for an upward force. Examples might be when a branch needs to be raised a bit or an apex leans too far forward and needs to be made more upright. In these instances, it may not be possible to safely reposition the problem area through wiring. Use of guys may be limited due to lack of strong anchor points. A relatively simple solution is through the use of props or push rods to apply the needed force (usually in the upward direction). Wooden push rods made of a convenient stiff wood works very well for this purpose. Stiff copper wire may be used as well. The amount of movement provided is easily adjusted by trimming the length of the push rod or moving the points where the rod is anchored and/or applies the force to the design element being adjusted. Figures 1 and 2 show push rods being used to adjust branch position in one of the most famous Japanese bonsai nurseries. In Japan, made for the purpose adjustable push rods are available although they are expensive.
