Himachal Pradesh is home to a large variety of medicinal and aromatic plants. Out of total 45,000 plant species in the country, as many as 3,245 species are found in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Of these, about 150 species are recognized for their medicinal and aromatic value. To harness this plant wealth on a sustainable basis, the agro-technologies for the cultivation of MADP's should be developed and transferred to hill farmers to encourage them to take up the cultivation of medicinal plants, particularly in forests, wastelands and orchards as an additional income-generating activity. In addition, industries must be promoted to produce phyto-chemicals, essential oils, medicines, cosmetics, etc. This Himalayan state has great potential as a medicinal and aromatic plants producer and manufacturer of herbal products for human health, awhile conserving the MADP biodiversity to protect the natural environment of the state.
