False birefringence in a polarization microscope

This paper discusses the manifestation of false birefringence in a transmitted-light polarization microscope. Possible ways of partially compensating its effect on the results of studies are outlined, and formulas are obtained for calculating the design parameters of afocal compensators of the angle of rotation of the plane of vibration with a half-wave plate. It is concluded that it is not expedient to put them into practice, and a method is proposed for compensating the indicated angle of rotation by introducing a half-wave plate, for example, into the system of the objective. It is established that the rotation of the plane of vibrations reaches its maximum when the angle between the plane of vibration and the plane in which the ray propagates equals not 45° but a somewhat larger value.
