Comment on: A single institution experience with skin sparing mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction.

We were very interested to read the recent article by Doddi et al documenting a single breast surgeon's experience and views on skin-sparing mastectomies (SSMs) with immediate breast reconstruction (IBR). We were pleased to see that the rate of local recurrence in this series was low; however, we felt that a couple of issues needed to be addressed.The practice of SSM and IBR is not new; SSMs were first described in 1991 by Toth and Lappert.1 In 2001, 95 of 130 BASO surgeons questioned were performing SSMs with IBR.2 The oncological safety of SSMs has been extensively published and accepted for well over 10 years.
